MAIS Proves Successful in First Three Years
March 2016
The Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) launched the Medical Assistance Intercept System (MAIS) in late 2012. Now three years later, MAIS has proven its potential for significant contributions to state Medicaid programs by providing a proactive tool that aids in Medicaid recovery.
In collaboration with the insurance industry and attorney offices, MAIS matches personal injury and workers' compensation claims against the Rhode Island Medicaid database. MAIS has processed over 80,000 matches to date and, after performing quality assurance activities, has placed liens on over 1,370 cases. These liens total over $15.4 million, which is quite significant for a state with just over 300,000 active Medicaid recipients. As proof that the program continues to produce, MAIS recently posted its second highest month for collections in December 2015, collecting over $436,000!
Rhode Island and the MAIS program have created an opportunity for states to take advantage of technology by introducing an innovative solution for the Medicaid industry. MAIS streamlines the discovery and potential recoupment of medical costs, resulting in strengthened Medicaid programs for communities while meeting state budgetary needs. MAIS looks forward to the future, as Rhode Island is working on expanding the program nationwide to help more states advance their Medicaid efforts.
