MAIS Holds Informative Session for Rhode Island Attorneys
June 2015
The Medical Assistance Intercept System (MAIS) , on behalf of the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS), recently organized an informational meeting that was well attended by Rhode Island attorneys. The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the program and improve knowledge in relation to the workflow and benefits that MAIS offers. The session included a presentation from Erin Casey, EOHHS Senior Legal Counsel, regarding the current Rhode Island General Laws and model legislation that is being introduced in several states. The session also gave an overview of the operations of the MAIS program and a system demonstration.
A notable feature of the MAIS program is the rapid issuance and delivery of documents. The daily match process with Medicaid databases provides current data, allowing MAIS to deliver critical documents to insurers and attorneys within seventy-two hours of validating the match. Prior to this, document turnaround timeframes typically stretched anywhere from thirty (30) to sixty (60) days. This improvement in the process dramatically increases the efficiency of establishing liens in an effort to intercept payments for reimbursement to the Rhode Island Medicaid Program.
Attorneys who attended the session responded positively to the presentation, reporting that the material was both informative and relevant to their responsibilities. The session outlined just how simple and effective it is for Rhode Island attorneys and insurers to participate in the MAIS program. Participation in MAIS became mandatory after the passage of R.I.G.L. Chapter 27-57.1, the Rhode Island Medical Assistance Intercept Act.
